Great West Gym Fest

Karsyn and I just got back from another gymnastics meet that was held in Couer d'Alene, Idaho.

This is by far the biggest, most spectacular meet we have been to. It went on for days with many additional activites besides the actual gymnastics meets. Once again, we flew and bunked up in a hotel with the Minors and two other teammates stayed at the same hotel as well. The girls saw the pool and wanted to go swimming, of course. This is a big "no-no" for a gymnast. The pool water makes their hands too soft and can cause them problems later when they compete on bars. But part of the joy of staying at a cheaper hotel, away from the coaches, is that "whatever happens at the Best Western, Stays at the Best Western"!

"Pointy feet, pointy feet, pointy feet will win the meet!"

The first event on our schedule was the "Ice Cream Social".

Besides having a great ice-cream bar, the girls got to meet and get autographs from 7 Olympian gymnasts. This is who they got to meet:

Shannon Miller (most decorated American gymnast ever)
Kyle Shewfelt (Canadian Floor Gold medalist Athens 2004)
Jason Gatson (Athens 2004)
Valeri Liukin (competed for Soviet Union in 1988 Olympics. Gold in horizontal and silver in parallel bars and All-Around. First man to do a triple back flip on floor and both a layout reverse Hecht and a Jaeger with full twist on high bar. Also father and coach to Nastia Liukin)
Missy Marlow (Olympics 1988, University of Utah)
Linda Methany-Mulvihill (Olympics 1964, 1968, 1972 First American woman to compete in finals, she won 4th place on Balance Beam)
Joyce Tanac-Schroeder (Olympics 1968)

I think the girls were more excited about the ice-cream than the Olympians! The only one Karsyn recognized was Valeri and she only knew him because he is Nastia's dad!

The next event was the "Big Show". This was a special meet to showcase all the top finishers from levels 8-10. They had strobe lights, a live band and a smoke machine! They made a really big deal out of it and it was fun to watch. They announced each individual girl before her event and only one girl competed at a time so all eyes were on her. Karsyn said that would make her so nervous she didn't know if she could ever do that!

This is Karsyn's whole level 7 team waiting for their turn to compete on Floor.

Before they knew I was taking their picture...
after they knew I was taking the picture! What a bunch of posers!

Shannon Miller handed out the Awards to the gymnasts and signed them for them afterwards.
Karsyn had another great meet, and most importantly, had a fabulous time. She is never so happy as she is when she is at a meet. Here are her scores and places for this Great West Gym Fest meet:

Vault
8.9 (7th place)

Bars
9.2 (5th place)

Beam
9.375 (3rd place)

Floor
9.450 (3rd place)

All-Around

36.925 (4th place)

How exciting for Karsyn and fun that Mom can tag along too!
It makes it all worth it when you can see how much she enjoys what she is doing. Hopefully, we will be able to see her too next month at state!
Wow, my very first "away" meet as a gymnast was in Couer d'Alene, Idaho. We stayed in cabins on a lake and competed outside. I still remember the floor ex was a wrestling mat (dive rolls were NOT fun on those). My parents were not there and I ordered eggs at a Denny's "Sunny Side Up." I've never eaten eggs since. Thanks for bringing back such fun memories for me and I'm glad the girls made such good memories for themselves! ~Lisa
