Should Old Acquaintance be forgot? I Think Not!

Scott has operated with Craig Shambaugh for 15 years. You probably couldn't find two people more different but that didn't stop them for forming a wonderful friendship full of mutual respect. Craig had retired from full-time OB/GYN practice and started working part time as a surgeon's assistant. He had a standing appointment to operate with Scott every Wednesday. When it came time for Craig to fully retire, Scott wanted to do something special for him. Craig prides himself on finding talent away from the main stream. He was always taking us to some little ma and pop restaurant he had discovered or a small-venue local concert of some singer-songwriter. His favorite of these had to be Craig Carothers. To prove our point, Craig had already taken us to see Craig Carothers in concert twice.

Craig had already mentioned to Scott that he didn't want to make a big deal out of his retirement. He just wanted to finish his last case, quietly say good-bye to a few people and walk away from the hospital. Scott of course had other plans (like I said, they were as opposite as opposites can be!). Scott talked Craig into coming to our home for dinner one night to celebrate with just two other couples (the surgical nurses and their husbands). But Scott's planing didn't stop there!

Scott tracked down Craig Carothers and discussed having him come do a home concert at our home the night of this "intimate" retirement dinner. We though C. Carothers was local but turns out he lives full time in Nashville now. That wasn't a problem as long we threw in some airfare for him! Scott began to tell Craig C. how much Craig S. loved him and his music. Come to find out, Craig Carothers totally knew who Craig Shambaugh was - could totally describe him - and might have even used the term "Stalker" when describing him!

The anticipation of the event for Scott was almost as fun as the event itself! Not only did we surprise Craig S. with inviting a few extra friends to his dinner, but he was completely surprised when Craig Carothers walked in! After a little visiting around the table, we had a full 2 hour private concert with Craig Carothers.

What a talented singer-songwriter! Our favorite part was hearing all the stories in between the songs that explained their origins or gave us more insight into his private life.

Craig Carothers gifted Craig Shambaugh (all these Craigs! gah!) a rare collection of every CD he has produced. Scott shared some really nice words about Craig, then Craig did the same about Scott, then they showed off their bro-mance with a big hug and a few tears. Craig honored Scott by gifting him the surgical mask he wore through every surgery.

It was such a great evening! Great music and great friends with no plans to retire this friendship!
