Washington D.C

Scott took advantage of having his brother in Washington D.C. and flew out with Layton for some male bonding over President's Weekend.  Getting tickets to tour the White House is not an easy thing anymore.  You have to apply and then it is a lottery pick if you get a tour or not.  Scott and Layton were two of the lucky few and started off the tour of D.C. at the Big House!

After the White House, they took a guided tour of the Capitol.

They ran into our State Representative, Jamie Herrera Beutler, while there.

Layton's favorite part of this tour was seeing the Library of  Congress.  He came home all motivated to reorganize our home library after Thomas Jefferson's library.

No trip to Washington D.C. is complete without a few visits to some of the wonderful local museums.  Most kids would dread these day long museum trips, but not Layton, he thrives on them!  These two are the perfect pair when it comes to museums since they both love to stop and read everything.  Then Layton usually takes it even one step further and take notes on the exhibits.  Notice there is usually a notebook in his hand just in case he sees something that inspires him!

They also took advantage of seeing historical sites such as Mt. Vernon, Arlington Cemetery, and the home of Robert E Lee.

Of course, they hit all the monuments but some of Layton's favorites were the Lincoln monument, the Iwo Jima monument, and the WWII monuments.

I can't think of better place to spend President's day than at the Ford Theater listening to symposiums on Lincoln.  It is pretty neat how the timing of this trip took place.  Layton loved seeing these buildings that are such an important part in the life and death of Pres. Lincoln.

They also stopped in to see how money is printed in the Printing and Engravings building, the IRS building and Layton's most anticipated visit to the National Archives.  He was so excited about seeing the original Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Layton just had to have his own copy of the "original" Declaration of Independence.  He carried that thing all over town with him that day but somehow didn't have it anymore at the end of the day.  So Scott went back to buy him another one - what a good daddy!

But I think what turned out to be both their favorites was visiting the Supreme Court.  They got up at the crack of dawn to get in line to get tickets to a hearing that day.  They people in front of them in line had been there since 1:30 a.m.! The only take the first 50 people in line for each day.  After waiting out in the dark, cold morning, Layton and Scott scored tickets #43 and #44 out of 50!

It is so great that Scott has the time to take off with each child like this for a one-on-one trip.  They had a great time and made special memories that will last them a lifetime!
