Happy Birthday to Me!
Apparently turning 43 is a pretty big deal! At least my sweet hubby made me feel like it was.
He put quite the thought into planning out my birthday celebration. My birthday fell on a Friday this year and that has become Scott's new day off each week. We had fun hanging out together that day, going to two schools for the kids assemblies then out to Panera for a lunch date. Afterwards, we packed an overnight bag and he took me to Portland City Grill for dinner. This restaurant is located in the top of one the tallest buildings in Portland and overlooks the Willamette River. Our reservations were early enough that we got to watch the sunset on the city and over Mt. Hood.
After dinner we did something so fun! It was fun because it was something out of the ordinary for us. We went to a comedy show at the Arlene Schnitzer Hall. We saw Gabriel Iglesias, otherwise known as "Fluffy". Neither one of us had even heard of him but Scott said the reviews were good and he was rated family-friendly. Before Gabriel began, he had about 4 other guys give some opening monologues. Most of them were not funny, only vulgar, and we were shocked that they said some of the things they said with so many children in the audience. But what was even more shocking to me, was that none of the parents left with their children, but rather sat and laughed together at the vulgar jokes. But Gabriel was awesome! He was a great story-teller with wonderful impersonations and facial expressions. I would definitely go see him again!
Then we spent a romantic night at the Westin in Portland - once again another great view of the city. We had a corner room with two large windows overlooking downtown.
Both the boys had several basketball games the following day, so our stay in Portland was short. We did sneak in a fancy breakfast before heading back home. I had always wanted to eat breakfast at Mother's Bistro and it just happened to be a quick walk from our hotel. We had a little wait to get in, but it was worth it!
So after one of our regular and crazy Saturdays at home, we went out for a family birthday dinner. Although my family looks really small in this photo! Kennedy is in Utah of course and Cassidy had dance team practice, but the rest of us went out for a quick dinner at Qdoba. For some reason I was craving Mexican and didn't feel like spending any more money after seeing how much Scott had already spoiled me. So I packed up all my Qdoba coupons and off we went. After we finished eating, Scott jokingly said, "Okay, now it is time to sing to mom". Well, my kids are not shy. They belt out a very loud "Happy Birthday" song and the other patrons and employees didn't know what to think. I am sure that was first for them all!
And as if celebrating my birthday all day Friday and Saturday were not enough...we had another celebration on Sunday! My good friend, Heidi Parker, invited us over to her house for dinner and Karsyn (with a little help from Layton) made me a birthday cake.
For my birthday, the kids decorated the house and left me these notes. Don't judge them by their spelling skills. They really are great kids!
(mom notes: "tight as a frito" is how Will describes his stomach just before throwing up. Will often turns around, sticks out his rear end and asks me if his pants make his butt look big before going to school and I am still not sure if he wants to be a Chinese whistler or a Chinese wrestler. I think he is built more for a wrestler.)
(mom notes: Layton's favorite words are adjectives)
As you can see, I am blessed beyond words. Thanks to friends and family for making my day so special.
