Twas the night before Christmas

Besides celebrating the birth of our Savior, I would have to say my favorite thing about Christmas is the traditions we have made over the years.  It is fun to see which traditions you keep from when you were a child, and which traditions you create with your new family after you become married.  We were forced to start many of our own traditions since we moved away from family soon after we were married.  But even some of those have evolved with each move around the country we have made.  Since moving to the Northwest, we have added two new Christmas Eve traditions:  sub sandwiches with the Rushings and Dustins, and the kids slumber party.

The Dustin's are our only family (through marriage) here in the Northwest since Shane and Julie moved to Washington D.C. for a couple years.  It has been very nice of them to continue including us in this Christmas Eve tradition, even though the other Rushings can't make it.  My kids look forward to this every year.  Their favorite is the Candy Bar game but I have really enjoyed the addition of reading the Christmas Story from Luke these past few years.

The kids were all excited to have Kennedy home for the holidays and were really looking forward to their kids slumber party in her (um, I mean, Cassidy's) room!  They got all set up by pulling in bean bag beds, pillows, blankets, and a movie to watch.  Basically, they destroyed the room.  But they had a good time doing it.  Until about 1:00 a.m. anyways.  With Christmas on a Sunday this year, and us on the 9:00 schedule, we had to wake up early enough to do Santa's gifts before church.  I kept waiting for the sounds of little (and not so little) feet to start pitter pattering around but...nothing.  I finally went upstairs to wake up the kids, and found them each in their own beds, and frankly, a little annoyed they were being awoken!

Once they were awake, they just looked at me, shook their heads, and said, "mom, we are all just too big to all fit in one bed anymore!"
