On Hallows Eve

It is a sweet treat, literally, to have grandma and grandpa here for halloween.  Keeping with grandma Norma's tradition of making popcorn balls for halloween, grandma made them here with the kids.  This is something she has done with the grandkids ever since grandma Norma died in 2003, but my kids always miss out.  Grandma is always so good to mail us a big box of finished popcorn balls, but I believe the real treat is in the making process and being together.  Luckily grandma had just finished the last of the popcorn balls seconds before she became extremely sick with a stomach bug!  I think the next 3 days were just a blur to her, but the kids will always remember this time with her.

Layton's piano teacher had a Halloween piano recital.  What a wonderful idea!  The kids got to all come in costume and this means no recital in the craziness of December!  All my kids went in costume.  I didn't stop to think to ask if my parents or Blake wanted a costume as well.  I had plenty they could had chosen from.  It wasn't until my dad borrowed Layton's Einstein wig after the recital, put it on, and didn't take it off until AFTER he made a COSTCO run, that I thought he might had liked his own costume!

Then it was time for the dreaded carving of the pumpkins.  Some how I got away without carving last year and there was no way my kids were going to let me get away with it again.  Karsyn had just gone to the Best of EFY in portland where the speakers there challenged the girls to read the Book of Mormon in 30 days.  Karsyn's little competitive spirit could not let that challenge get the best of her!  She read night and day for one month, but she did it!  Blake had to help her out with the carving of her pumpkin so she could make her nightly goal of reading that night, but I think they made a good team.

Will wanted a JAZZ pumpkin.  We didn't have a pattern to follow but we did the best we could and Will was very happy with the results.

Layton did a traditional pumpkin masters pattern and was quite proud of himself and his ghost.

Halloween night came and we were off for some candy.  Cassidy stayed at home with grandma C.C. to pass out candy and Scott and I took off with Karsyn, Layton and Will.  Cassidy dressed up as a hippie. Karsyn was a baker (complete with a face full of flour), Layton was Einstein and Will was some Star Wars character that no one has ever heard of.  We did get a token photo with all the kids while Kennedy was here for the baptism.  Kennedy was dressed up as Kennedy from the Marineers!
