High Adventure in the San Juan Islands

So this is Scott's first (and most likely last) contribution to my blog. As you might already know, girls are not invited on high adventure outings so I really didn't have much to say!

I had the oppportunity of going with the young men in our ward on their high adventure trip the San Juan Islands. I felt that it would be permissable to take Layton along with me so that I could have some good bonding time with one of my sons as well. We charted a 165 ft sailboat the Zodiac Schooner that was built for the heirs to the Johnson & Johnson family in 1924. It was a beautifully restored wooden 4 masted sailboat that was staffed by volunteers. It departed out of Bellingham, WA. Our days were spent on sailing manuevers which was quite a physically demanding experience. We also were giving duties on the boat such as polishing brass, washing the deck, steering the boat from the helm, and being on bow watch. When the wind wasn't blowing we would motor to islands of interest and hike, explore, kayak, and swim. I had heard that the San Juans were beautiful and we were not disappointed. We had great weather and each day was filled with new adventures. We unfortunately did not see any whales but did see bals eagles, bighorn sheep, and seals. We ate like kings with a chef on board who prepared 3 delicious meals a day as well as a desert every night. The nights were filled with card games in the gally, chess games, devotionals, and well earned rest. Layton had a blast with the older boys. I couldn't find him one night and after much searching I found him being taught the finer points of Texas Hold'em 7 card draw! He confessed they were only playing for jelly beans. It was a great experinece for Layton and I and the rest of the young men. It was a perfect high adventure in that it offered us the opportunity to learn something new, it was physically challenging, it promoted opportunities for teamwork/bonding, and there was leisure time in a incredibly beautiful part of the country

This is Layton's schedule from his journal he kept that week. I love how he has "Explore" on there twice.

Much of their time was spent working on the boat; polishing brass, swabbing the deck, working in the map room, hoisting sails etc.

Apparently Scott thought he signed up for a cruise rather than a working ship. All I heard about from the other leaders was how much Scott slept!

All of those pics of Scott relaxing on his 'cruise' are hilarious! I thought for sure he would have been Capt. Rushing on the boat and ran a tight ship!
I am totally laughing at all those pictures of him sleeping - especially the one where he's asleep against the tree!

Love the sleeping pictures. Who knew he could sleep so well without being on his couch in front of the t.v.? Looks like such a fun time for Layton to be with his dad.
Also, when did Layton start looking so much older?
