Dance Festival 2010
Six months of practicing + 7 Stakes + almost 2,000 youth = One Fabulous Dance Festival
The youth from our Stake along with 6 other Stakes started practicing for this weekend back in January. At least 2 of the 4 monthly-scheduled mutual nights were dedicated to learning several dances and the words to the Navy song and the hymn "How Firm a Foundation". The theme for this years Dance Festival was "A Firm Foundation". I was 2nd Counselor in the Young Women's presidency during these long six months so I know what I am talking about when I say that SOOO much work went into this event. I know the kids (and most leader
s for that matter) were growing tired of the practices at the end of the six months. But I didn't find one person after Dance Festival Weekend that did not have the most amazing experience. The festival itself lasted for 3 days and was held here in Vancouver at a local High School football field. Since several Stakes had to travel large distances to get here, local members housed all of the out-of-town youth and leaders. We had two young women stay at our house that were from Longview. This weekend was also their Youth Conference for the year. We had Sister Cook from the General Young Women Presidency come and speak to the youth. The Laurels from all Stakes learned the Waltz and the Disco. The Mia Maids danced the Swing, the Beehives danced to "Car Wash" and the Deacons did a boxing dance to "Eye of the Tiger". In addition they had extra specialty dances that you could try out for. Kennedy chose to dance
in the Lyrical while Cassidy danced in the Bollywood number. At the last minute, they asked Cassidy to fill in for the Laurel dances, the Waltz and the Disco as well as her Swing dance. So she had some last minute cramming to do! Everyone did great! Words can't describe the feeling you got as you watched 2,000 youth run out all at once on the dance field. There was just something special about seeing that many LDS kids, all choosing to be where they should be and doing what they should be, all at once. Besides the individual class and specialty dances, they performed several numbers as one big group. They did a great job getting the audience to particpate, gave a wonderful tribute to all branches of the armed forces, put on a great show and also somehow managed to leave you feeling such a strong spirit. Because of the limited seating in the stadium, they asked each Ward to come to one assigned performance. They performed the show three different times over a two day period. We went to the
first performance and were hooked! Scott ended up going to all 3 performances and even with leaving town the next day, I somehow found time to go back a second showing myself.
