King of the Court

It all started after grandma and grandpa Stewart and Uncle Blake came to visit in the fall of 2009. After one week with them Layton was a basketball junkie. He not only came to love the sport, but also came to understand every aspect of it. He spent hours on the computer looking up rules, moves, and stats. Every book he checked out of the library was on basketball or the NBA. Before you knew it, our dinner conversations turned from pokemon to trades and luxury taxes!

So I began looking for a way to fit basketball into Layton's busy schedule. He started out with a 5 week clinic since he hadn't had any prior basketball experience. The poor kid, he had been teased by kids at school about being such a bad basketball player. Then, after the clinic and one session of basketball games, he was being left out of recess games because he was too good! Layton played on a team for 7 weeks through the Parks and Recreation league. His coach is in our Ward and several boys from church were on his team. What a wonderful experience for him! He definitely wins the most-improved award. Even though it was his first year to play ball, he was the team's high-scorer. In his final game, he made 17 of the 22 points scored!

Not only is Layton great on offense, he is also tough on defense. Sometimes to the point of driving the other kids crazy! During one game Layton had so many densive fouls that we heard the Ref say, "Number 10 thinks he's a backpack!"

The video below shows off a few of his baskets plus a little of his tough defensive side...

Layton has some great basketball skills. I love how he stole the ball and scored. He has a 'sweet' shot.
