Hero Day
The Friday before Martin Luther King day our elementary school held a special Hero Day assembly. Layton's teacher called us the day before inviting us to attend. She said Layton was one of two students chosen to read his essay on an everyday hero aloud to the school at the assembly. She wanted to make sure we knew about it because Layton had written about his dad.

My Hero
by Layton Rushing
My hero isn’t famous like Michael Jordan. He is just an ordinary person who just does really good deeds! My hero is my dad.
My dad loves football and all kinds of other sports. He helps me learn so much more about basketball and the NBA. My dad loves golf too. We both are big fans of Tiger Woods. My dad is so in common with me. We both like sports so much. He always encourages me to do better all the time with my basketball moves and skills.
My dad is my hero because he cares so much about us. Like, all the time at home he keeps on saying “I love you guys”. He is like a caring green machine. My dad always buys very significant things for my birthday or Christmas. He is brave, have very good etiquette, and he is a very helpful person.
My dad also is a doctor who works on cancer. He wanted to do that because his dad died with cancer when he was about 60 years old. And he was very determined to be a doctor who works on cancer so he can remember his dad. By working so hard to help people, he saved many lives. My dad is a person who does something before it should be done.
My dad technically saved me, because when I walk in the road, he always warns me not just to run right across the street to the car on the way out of church. He always reminds me to look both ways when I come through the ways of the roads. And when he comes into the garage I always remember to move out of the way. All the time, when I’m outside in my humongous driveway, playing basketball, he comes down the road and I move on to the yard to not get hit. I will never forget my dad!
(Disclaimer: Scott is not a huge fan of Tiger Woods private life! However, we did not feel it in his best interest to go there with our 9 year old son!)
