I know Karate and I'm not afraid to use it!
Layton had his birthday party at the gym where he takes Karate classes. I'm not sure who had more fun, Layton, the guests or his parents watching them! His teacher is so amazing with those kids. One minute he had them scared to death and then the next minute they were laughing. Afterwards, Scott said that he thought that was the best party any of the kids had ever had. I am sure he meant to clarify that he was talking about any party NOT hosted by me at home! The kids got to warm up, learn a horse-stance and a karate bow. Then Mr. K taught the kids that karate is used for self-defense only and how to stay safe by protecting their safety zone. Then came the event every kid was scared to death of but also couldn't wait for it happen...being chased by Mr. K and his bamboo sword. It was the funniest thing watching these kids be soo excited with such a look of fear on their face at the same time. Another favorite is the ropes. Layton has taken karate for one year now. He has grown a lot in this time. Not only has he gotten better at the skills but it has really helped him learn self-control. He is learning to keep eye contact and control making noises and talking out loud all the time. But the one thing that still eludes Layton, is mastering the ropes! Poor kid cannot run the pole and do a back flip. After many tries Mr K. finally helped him over since it was his birthday. It didn't help much that his little brother got it after one try either. Finally, the kids had a contest to see who could jump over the most mats. It came down to Karsyn and Layton. Layton finally had a chance to redeem himself after the ropes! And that is exactly what he did. Layton had to use his hands to lift himself over the top of the mats. By some miracle the mats wobbled but didn't fall down, leaving Layton the winner. He couldn't had been prouder.
We have a tradition in our family. After the kids are 8 years old they ask their birthday guests to bring donations instead of gifts. The birthday child gets to choose which charity they would like to support for their birthday. Layton chose to support the Humane Society this year. Thanks to all his friends, Layton was able to raise over $100 for his charity this year!
