The 10 lb. Car

Not only did Layton survive his first Pinewood Derby in Scouts, but he came home a winner!

He helped his dad design, sand and paint his Bobcat themed car which also earned him the "Scout Spirit" award.  It was a great night and everyone that went had a blast.

I asked Will earlier that day if he was excited to go watch Layton race his car.  He said he was excited but he didn't think he could make it.  I asked him why?  Did he have a big date?  He replied, "No, it is just a really good day to go watch clouds".  We convinced him that there are plenty of days with clouds in Vancouver and he should go watch his brother race.

Layton took first place in every race!  It didn't take long before he had his own groupies.  This little girl didn't leave Layton's side and every time I looked over at him she had his arm around him.  Girls just can't resist a fast man!

Reminds me of his father (aka Ricky Bobby)!  I asked Scott during the Derby if he thought that little girl would stick it out with him if he ever crashed, lost the race, ran around the gym in his underwear thinking he was on fire or would she run off and put her arm around his best friend?

Drivers Start your Engines!

Layton tied for first place with 32 points!  Everytime it was Layton's turn to race, the MC would announce Layton as "Layton and his 10 lb. car"!

This was Layton's perma-grin after the race - he couldn't had been prouder (except for maybe "winning" the cake decorating contest last month!)

Ryan has his pinewood derby on Thursday. Any good pointers? I don't think we've ever attended a derby where one car took first place EVERY time! That is quite the accomplishment. I wonder if it was rigged now that he is the bishop's son and all. Or maybe it was an added blessing because Scott is the bishop. Either way I think the bishop calling is behind it all. And I love the new girl he picked up at the races!

I will never experience a pinewood derby but I can feel the excitement through your blog. Thanks! Congrats to Layton!

That is really great. We always had the best design (compliments of my leather seat on one of the cars)but I don't think we ever won first place. I think the Stringham's always won and had the ugliest car.
What a cutie. Don't you just LOVE it when they get so excited about something that they can hardly contain themselves? When Cameron got his participation trophy at the end of his first soccer season he really thought his team had earned it. "YES!! We FINALLY won!" They didn't win ANY games . . . ever . . . but he was proud of his trophy just the same.
