Mayflower sails through for a win!

Layton participated in his first Blue and Gold Banquet last week.  The theme of the night was "American ABC's".  The room was decorated with maps, state symbols and lots of red, white and blue.  We also played a game of "Family Feud" where all the questions had to do with American geography. But the highlight of the night for Layton was the father/son cake decorating contest. Each dad and son team was to bring a cake they had decorated ahead of time to be judged and then used later for our dessert.  Layton really wanted to win this contest. Of course everything was done at the very last minute.  I came up with the idea the night before and we baked and decorated the cake right before the meeting.  Their cake was going to be the Mayflower cake.  A few years ago I had made a pirate ship cake for Layton's birthday party and I figured the boys could re-create the pirate ship but make the sails and flags match that of the Mayflower and voila, you have a very historical American cake!  I am not exactly sure what happened but I do not remember my pirate ship being so difficult.  The top layer of the cake would not stop sliding off and the frosting would not stick to the cake...it actually reminded me much more of the how the Titanic would look after 100 years under the sea.  Scott came up with a brillant idea as we were walking out the door.  He found a large rock and propped it up against the side of the cake that kept leaning and called it "Plymouth Rock".  Layton was so proud of his cake.  He just knew he was going to win first place.

When it came time to give out the awards for the cakes, Layton's name was called first.  He went crazy...he was screaming and yelling and shaking his fists high up above his head in the sign of victory!  They gave him a certificate that said he won the prize for the most historically-correct cake.  None of that mattered to Layton.  All he knew and cared about was they had called his name first and that meant he got first place.  We then had to leave immediately because Scott had Bishop visits to make and we were all in one car. They ended up of course giving an award to each boy that brought a cake but thank goodness Layton had already left the building!

I love it! It makes all the effort worth it, just to see Layton's excitement. That picture shows just how thrilled he was.
What a darling boy he is!

Great story! What luck that they gave him the award very first! The cake does look like it deserved 1st place though!

How lucking was that! Isn't it cute what gets them so excited? I had the opposite experience with Bridger's first B & G Banquet. We left at the end with him crying because he didn't win for "best tasting cake." He could tell that they didn't really taste his cake, because there wasn't any cut off of it. He was heartbroken that the judges didn't judge fairly. They only gave out 2 awards that year: Best Tasting & Best Overall. The next year, Donnie was cubmaster, and he made sure EVERY boy went home with an award. Oh, and that first year, Bridger's cake was BY FAR the best tasting cake, so I think he had a valid argument...
