Karate Kid

Layton Started Karate in Sept. 2008.  He has waited several years for this moment.  He first showed an interest in karate when he was 5 years old.  I told him I would sign him up when he turned 6 years old.  Well he turned 6, then 7, and finally 8 before I found a way to work it in with the girls crazy schedules.  After waiting several years to be able to get involved in extra curricular activites, this year has become the "year of Layton"!  He is taking piano, art and karate classes and also involved in Scouts.  Karate has been so great for him.  With the life lessons and self-discipline he is learning there I could care less if he ever learns a single karate move!  Layton has a habit of always needing to make noise and move.  If he doesn't have something to say he will hum, snap, talk to himself or make weird noises with his mouth all while pacing around the room.  His first day of karate he was making his usual grunts and sighs while doing push-ups and the teacher told him right off the bat, there would be no sound effects during class!  He has learned to wait his turn to talk, to be quick and to the point with his comments, respect and how to stand still for more than 3 seconds.  After three months he was ready to get his first belt.  It was a gold belt and to him it couldn't had been more valuable than if it were truly make of pure gold!

Check out the video of Layton being awarded his belt.  My favorite part is hearing him say "Thank-you Sir!" loud and clear to his teacher at the end.
