Fast and Furious

Kennedy was FAST and I was FURIOUS!  Let me explain.  Kennedy got her permit to drive just a few days after turning 15.  There, doesn't that explain it all?  Oh, you want some more details?  Well, Kennedy was waiting for me, in the drivers seat, yesterday to go to dance.  I prefer her to practice driving in the old Honda Civic but she looked so excited sitting there behind the wheel of my suburban that I let her drive.  She had to back the suburban out of the garage which is no easy task, even for me!  I could tell that her wheels were turned and she was not backing out straight so I asked her to slow down.  At that moment she threw the pedal to the metal and we took off peeling rubber out of the garage while side swiping the whole front right side of the car!  She said she mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal.  She was immediately in tears and I tried with every ounce of my soul not to start screaming at her.  She knew I was mad and frustrated but I must admit I did handle the situation quite well.  My biggest frustration was that we had just spent $1,800 to fix the front left side of the car and now she has ruined the front right side of the car.  But just after the moment of impact, two thoughts came to me.  The first was of a much younger version of myself doing the same thing to my parents garage and car right after my mission.  I remember so well, my dad standing there watching me do it and afterwards only shaking his head and mentioning that he could tell I hadn't driven a car for 18 months.  What a relief that was to know he wasn't going to scream at me and make a big issue out of it.  I had already felt so terrible.  The second thought was that I was also the reason we had just spent $1,800 to fix the suburban! So Kennedy was saved by her mother's imperfections and a great dad that already had the foresight and wisdom to react just like my dad did.

Ahhhh, I remember it well. All these years and I'm finally getting the side of the doorway repaired and repainted.

I hope your repairs go more quickly.

Ummm....you might want to ask Brittany about the time she had her learner's permit and was backing out of a parking space at Costco :)

Please let Kennedy know that I did the same thing LEAVING THE DMV WITH MY BRAND NEW LEARNERS PERMIT! The ink on that sucker wasn't even dry yet and I had my first accident trying to back out of a parking space.

You get the "Good Mom Award" this week. I only hope I can keep my wits about me when one of mine does the same thing. At least no other cars were involved.

Yes, Costco. I was driving us home from Costco with my permit and for whatever reason just turned my wheels a lot to get out of the space and when I got too close to the car next to me, I for some reason decided to just gun it. I just totally swiped the car next to us. I had never been so embarrassed in my whole life. Mom asked me why I didn't just stop, especially since that was what she was yelling at me to do! I said I don't know I just got scared! Kennedy I feel your pain, and the good news is most people do. As you will find out everyone has a story like yours.

Hi Kennedy - I was just reading Aunt Brittany's comment and I need to let you know that not all people have experiences like yours. In fact, I don't ever recall a time where I 'gassed it' instead of using the brakes. This is something that must run through the Stewart girls only. Or just girls - but wait - your uncle Chad has done damage to my car probably doing the same thing. So, all girls and uncle Chad must drive the same. Sorry Brittany, but you stand corrected. Lots of love,
Tio Gavino!

What- this is the first thing I have heard about a car wreck? My car and my garage? It is amazing what I can learn about reading my family's blog. Gotta run look at the garage & car.

Kennedy,

There are somethings in life you just will look back and laugh at. Like me nailing Gavins' pitiful excuse for a mustang. I'd do it again given the chance. Some guys come into the family and they just never get the hint. Rumor has it the guy launches his boat like a total chick. (No offense Kennedy)

I do believe someone other than the real Heather was commenting. Could the real Heather tell about her experience driving home in our neighbors car just after getting her drivers license!
